Home Improvement Projects for Pest Prevention
There’s no place like home. It’s cozy, it’s comfy and most importantly, it’s yours — that is, unless you’ve got pests. Living with pests is like having the worst roommates you can imagine, and since we’ve all been spending more time at home, that’s not something that any of us want. Luckily, there are several handy DIY and home improvement projects that help prevent pests from moving in. And if you’re home a lot more, that means you have more time to actually get them done! Try your hand at some of these pest-preventing home improvement projects and be a few steps ahead of pests.
1. Garage Organization
Whether you know it or not, garages can be the main entry point for pests in a home. If you use it as a catchall for boxes, papers, bags of old items and other storage, you’ve just created a cozy spot where pests can hide and multiply. In addition to doing a deep cleaning of your garage, try a DIY shelving system to keep boxes and other items up off the ground and away from pests that might use them as a hiding spot.
2. Caulking
Going around your home and looking for any small cracks and holes might be the last thing you want to do. When left unattended, though, these openings act as the perfect entry point for pests. If you’ve got some time on your hands, pick up some caulk from your local home improvement store and go around filling these openings to shut your home off from pests.
3. Seal Windows & Change Screens
Make it a double DIY and make sure to seal windows while caulking, too. Apply a moisture-resistant formula to the outer edge of the window frame. For added security, check all window screens for holes, tears and gaps. If you find any, replacing mesh window screens is an easy DIY that can prevent critters from entering your home.
4. Trim Trees & Bushes
A tree-lined yard can create an arborous oasis, but it can also be a hideout for pests — especially when left unkempt. Pests can use trees, bushes and vines as hiding spots and as jumping-off points that make getting into your home easier. Not only does keeping a tidy yard look good, it keeps pests at bay, too.
5. Fix Leaking Faucets
Damp, dark and moist areas like under-sink plumbing can act as a breeding ground and watering hole for a wide array of pests. If you’ve got a little leak now, you could have a big pest problem down the line. Grab your wrench and get familiar with some basic plumbing tips — you’ll have a pest-proof home in no time.
