Beat The Heat: Play the Pest Control Way

Summer is here, and two things are guaranteed: lots of bugs and restless kids. It may seem overwhelming at times trying to keep your kids occupied in the months between school years. Fortunately, Hughes Exterminators has some educational and engaging possibilities to help keep your kids busy, and maybe distract them from all the mosquito bites on their legs.

Buggie Activities to Keep Busy This Summer

  • Grab craft supplies or household items and encourage your little one to design her own bug. There are endless creative possibilities, and this is a great indoor activity when the heat is too much to bear.
  • Revise a game of bingo where each family member gets a unique card for bugs—preferably ones that can’t be found in your own backyard. The first person to get five in a row gets a prize.
  • Let your child be a pretend pest controller, protecting family picnics or days at the pool from unwanted visitors. This job may include clearing out any rainwater that has pooled in outdoor toys or flowerpots—standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Let your child begin a bug collection. Nature kits can be found at most toy stores, but a glass jar with holes poked in the lid can also be effective. Bug catching can keep your child busy for hours, and the hobby provides fun, inexpensive pets.
  • If rain or heat is keeping you indoors for the afternoon, visit our For Teachers and Kids page for awesome ideas. There you can find coloring pages, view the Pest Library, or look at lesson plans that will provide some educational activities.
